Vesak is also known as one of the most significant celebrations in Buddhism. It commemorates three major events in the life of Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha: his birth, enlightenment, and passing into Parinirvana. The celebration typically takes place on the full moon day of the lunar month Vesak, which usually falls in May. Buddhists worldwide observe this sacred day with various devotional practices, including temple visits, prayers, chanting, and acts of generosity such as donations and charitable activities.
The school (OWC) initiated to observe Sil (meditation and ethical practices) and decorate the premises with Vesak lanterns is a beautiful way to honor the occasion. Lanterns symbolize the light of wisdom that dispels ignorance, reflecting the teachings of the Buddha. The collaboration of the entire community in these celebrations fosters unity and reinforces the core values of Buddhism: compassion, mindfulness, and the pursuit of enlightenment.
